Ratio, proportion & rate

Narrated lesson · press play

Ratio, proportion and rate is the maths of comparing and sharing fairly — splitting a prize, mixing a recipe, finding the best buy at the shop, reading a map. We simplify ratios, divide a quantity in a given ratio, tell direct from inverse proportion, calculate rates like average speed and unit price, and use scales for maps and models.

What you'll learn in this lesson

By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Mathematics 1.3):

  • Simplify a ratio to its lowest whole-number terms (with matching units)
  • Divide a quantity in a given ratio, and increase or decrease a quantity by a ratio
  • Use direct proportion (the unitary method) to find unknown quantities
  • Use inverse proportion to solve practical problems
  • Calculate average speed and other common rates, including unit price / best buy
  • Use scales in practical situations, for maps and scale models
