Big numbers and tiny numbers stop being scary once you know two ideas. An index is just a short way of writing repeated multiplication, and standard form is the tidy shape A × 10ⁿ that professionals use to write huge and minute quantities. We meet index notation, the three laws of indices (multiply → add, divide → subtract, power of a power → multiply), the special zero, negative and fractional indices, and then how to write numbers in standard form, convert both ways, and multiply and divide in standard form.
