Approximation, rounding & limits of accuracy

Real measurements are almost never exact, so we round them, estimate with them, and stay honest about the little range they hide. This lesson teaches you to round to decimal places and significant figures, to estimate any calculation quickly by rounding each number to one significant figure, and to find the upper and lower bounds of a rounded measurement — then to combine those bounds through adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.

What you'll learn in this lesson

By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Mathematics 1.5):

  • Give approximations to a specified number of decimal places
  • Give approximations to a specified number of significant figures
  • Round answers to a reasonable degree of accuracy in the context of a problem
  • Make estimates of a calculation by rounding each number to 1 significant figure
  • Give appropriate upper and lower bounds (limits of accuracy) for data given to a specified accuracy
  • Obtain upper and lower bounds to the results of calculations (+ − × ÷) from data given to a specified accuracy
