In 1948 the National Party won power in South Africa and set about building a system they called apartheid — 'apartness'. In this lesson we discover where apartheid came from, meet the pillar laws one at a time and see how they locked together like the parts of one machine, follow grand apartheid and the forced removals of Sophiatown and District Six, and weigh up the great AS question: how far did every group suffer, and why did those who benefited keep the system alive for so long?
