Protecting your idea, standards (NSI) & the Acts that govern enterprise

A good idea is valuable — so valuable that others may try to copy it and take the reward that should be yours. In this lesson we learn the four ways to protect an entrepreneurial idea (copyright, trademark, patent and a business rights clause) and how to choose the right one. Then we look at the Acts that govern enterprise in Namibia: the laws that protect our natural resources, the standards set by the Namibian Standards Institution (NSI), and the Labour Act's protection of HIV positive workers.

- Compare the means of protecting an entrepreneurial idea and choose the most suitable one for their enterprise (copyright, trademarks, patents, business rights clause)
- Describe the main benefits of Acts that govern the utilisation of natural resources in Namibia
- Define standards
- Explain the aims of standards, prescribed by the Namibian Standards Institution (NSI), in the production of products or provision of services
- Explain why enterprises should comply with the Labour Act no 11 of 2007 provisions for HIV and AIDS positive employees in a workplace
- Investigate and report on the Acts, rules and regulations which will apply to their chosen enterprise
