Paper 1 Part 2: answering 1, 2 & 3-mark questions in your own words

By the end you should be able to (NSSCAS English Second Language (AS) 5.1.7):

• Learners should be able to describe the format of Paper 1 Part 2 (a ~700-word text with open-ended questions worth 1, 2 or 3 marks, 20 marks in total).
• Learners should be able to apply the golden 'own words' rule — rephrasing an idea from the text instead of copying it.
• Learners should be able to read the command word and the mark allocation to decide what kind of answer, and how much, is required.
• Learners should be able to match the number of distinct points in an answer to the number of marks available.
• Learners should be able to use the two-step method: find the idea in the text, then say it in their own words.
• Learners should be able to identify and avoid the common ways marks are lost — copying, vagueness, under-answering and irrelevant material.
• Learners should be able to construct a full-mark three-mark answer as three distinct, rephrased points.
