No measurement is perfect — a good scientist is honest about that. Learn the difference between accuracy and precision, how uncertainty and significant figures show the quality of data, how to spot and handle anomalous results, the two types of error, and how to suggest improvements.

What you'll learn in this lesson

By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Chemistry 1.4):

  • State and use the relationship between precision, accuracy and uncertainty, and the appropriate number of significant figures for recording measurements and calculated data
  • Handle and process experimental observations, including dealing with anomalous (inconsistent) results
  • Evaluate results/data and draw appropriate conclusions in relation to the hypothesis
  • Analyse anomalous results, discuss trends, and identify sources of error (random and systematic)
  • Suggest possible improvements to reduce errors
