Groups, periods & periodicity
Narrated lesson · press play
The Periodic Table is chemistry's master map. Learn how the elements are arranged by atomic number, what groups and periods tell you, where metals and non-metals sit, and the trends in properties across periods and down groups.
What you'll learn in this lesson
By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Chemistry 2.3.1–2.3.2):
- Describe the Periodic Table as the elements arranged in order of increasing atomic (proton) number
- Explain that a group is a column of elements with the same number of outer electrons and similar properties
- Explain that a period is a row, and the period number equals the number of occupied electron shells
- Locate metals, non-metals and metalloids on the table
- Describe trends across a period and down a group (including reactivity of Group 1 and Group 7)
