Group properties — Group I, Group VII, transition metals & noble gases

  • Deduce and describe trends in physical and chemical properties within a group (melting point, density, colour, state, reactivity)
  • Describe Li, Na and K in Group I as soft metals showing trends in melting point, density, reaction with water, and flame-test identification
  • State that Group I metals form soluble hydroxides that cannot be precipitated
  • Describe Cl, Br and I in Group VII as diatomic non-metals with trends in colour, reactivity and state
  • State the reactions of Group VII elements with other halide ions (displacement)
  • Describe the transition elements as dense, high-melting metals forming coloured compounds and acting as catalysts
  • Describe the noble gases (Group VIII) as unreactive and state their use in providing an inert atmosphere
