Preparing a soluble salt

When the metal is less reactive than zinc, its oxide or carbonate is added in excess to a warm acid. The acid is fully neutralised; the remaining solid is filtered off; the salt solution is then evaporated and crystallised.

Add the solid to warm acid in a beaker, stir

Keep adding until no more dissolves (excess)

Filter to remove unreacted solid

Heat filtrate to evaporate half the water

Allow to cool and crystallise

Filter and dry the crystals
