Physics is measuring the world and then doing sums with what you measured. Before any of the physics, we sharpen the number skills you'll use all year — the four operations with correct rounding, averages, fractions, percentages, ratios and reciprocals, direct and inverse proportion, positive and negative indices, quick estimating, and rearranging equations like x = y + z and x = yz.

What you'll learn in this lesson

By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Physics 1.1):

  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide, rounding the answer correctly
  • Use averages, decimals, fractions, percentages, ratios and reciprocals
  • Use direct and inverse proportion
  • Use positive and negative whole-number indices and exponents in calculations
  • Make approximate (rough) evaluations of numerical expressions to check answers
  • Solve equations of the form x = y + z and x = yz for any one term when the other two are known
