This lesson brings physics right into your house — the mains supply, the three wires that reach every appliance, and the clever devices that keep you safe. We'll wire a three-pin plug the correct way, meet fuses and circuit breakers (and choose a fuse rating from P = V I), understand earthing and double insulation, and learn to spot the everyday hazards of damaged insulation, overloading and damp.

- Distinguish between mains electricity (a.c. 220 V) and electricity from batteries (d.c. low voltage)
- State the uses of electricity in heating, lighting (lamps in parallel), motors, bells and relays
- State the meaning of live, neutral and earth, and identify the wires by colour code
- Describe how to wire a mains three-pin plug safely
- Explain how a fuse works and choose a fuse rating using I = P ÷ V
- Discuss safety devices — earthing, circuit breakers, switches in the live wire, double insulation and fuses
- State the dangers of damaged insulation, overheating cables, overloaded sockets and damp conditions
- Discuss how electrical energy in the home can be conserved
