Everything in mathematics is built on numbers and the things we do with them. In this first lesson we sort numbers into their families (natural, whole, integer, rational, irrational and real), read them using place value, and use the four operations in the right order with BODMAS. Then we meet factors and multiples and their partners the HCF and LCM, break numbers into their prime factors, and finish with squares, cubes and their roots.
What you'll learn in this lesson
By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Mathematics 1.1):
- Classify numbers as natural, whole, integer, rational, irrational and real numbers
- Use place value to read and understand whole numbers
- Apply the four operations using the correct order of operations (BODMAS), including brackets
- Find the factors and multiples of a number
- Find the Highest Common Factor (HCF) and Lowest Common Multiple (LCM) of two numbers
- Identify prime numbers and write a number as a product of its prime factors
- Calculate squares, cubes, square roots and cube roots of numbers
