Measuring is how we describe the world with numbers, and this lesson makes it feel easy. We meet the SI units for length, mass, capacity and time, learn the one golden rule behind every conversion, then convert length, mass, capacity, areas and volumes. After that we read the 12-hour and 24-hour clock, work out how long journeys take, read a timetable, and finish with a first taste of a compound measure — speed.
What you'll learn in this lesson
By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Mathematics 3.1):
- Use metric (SI) units of length, mass, area, volume and capacity in everyday situations
- Express a quantity in terms of larger or smaller units by converting correctly
- Convert areas and volumes by squaring or cubing the multiplier
- Read and use the 12-hour and 24-hour clock, and read clocks, dials and timetables
- Calculate time durations and arrival times, and read simple timetables
- Understand a simple compound measure such as speed (distance ÷ time)
