Data is just facts we gather — and this lesson turns those facts into pictures that tell their story at a glance. We sort data into types, collect it with tally charts and frequency tables, then build and read every diagram the exam asks for: pictograms, bar charts, pie charts (with their angles worked out), line graphs, histograms and stem-and-leaf diagrams. We finish by learning how to choose the right chart for the job.
What you'll learn in this lesson
By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Mathematics 12.1):
- Recognise types of data: categorical, and numerical (discrete or continuous)
- Collect and classify data using tally charts and frequency tables (including grouped frequency tables)
- Construct and interpret pictograms, bar charts and pie charts (calculating the sector angles)
- Construct and interpret line graphs and histograms with equal class widths
- Construct and interpret stem-and-leaf diagrams, keeping the original values
- Read, interpret and draw simple conclusions from each table and diagram
- Choose an appropriate chart or diagram for a given set of data
