Graphs of modulus functions

Narrated lesson · press play

In this lesson you'll learn to draw the graphs of modulus functions, the ones with the tall bars. You'll build y = |x| from a table and meet its sharp V shape, then use the reflection trick to sketch y = |ax|, y = |ax + b| and y = |x| + c. You'll read the vertex and intercepts straight off each sketch. Finally you'll count how many solutions an equation has just by looking at a picture.

What you'll learn in this lesson

By the end you should be able to (NSSCAS Mathematics (AS) 2.1.2):

  • Interpret and sketch the graphs of y = |ax|, y = |ax + b| and y = |x| + c, where a, b and c are integers, reading off the vertex and intercepts and using the graph to count the solutions of |ax + b| = k.
