Last lesson we learned the Earth's shell is cracked into slowly-moving plates. Now we follow that story to its most dramatic chapter. We cut a volcano open to see the magma chamber, vent and crater, meet the three volcano shapes — ash and cinder cones, shield volcanoes and towering stratovolcanoes — and find out exactly how volcanoes and earthquakes are born at plate margins. We'll see why they cluster along the Pacific Ring of Fire, sort their effects into primary and secondary (and the surprising benefits too), study the real Tohoku tsunami of 2011 and the Mayon eruption of 2018, and learn how prediction, preparation and clever building keep people safe.
