Good writing is never magic — it is built, patiently, in stages. In this gentle lesson Miss Veronica shows you the whole writing process from a blank page to a finished piece: brainstorm your ideas and grow a mind map, think about Purpose, Audience and Format, build clear paragraphs from a topic sentence, mix your sentences, then revise, edit and proofread against a checklist. This is the foundation for every writing task in Paper 1 Section B.
What you'll learn in this lesson
By the end you should be able to (NSSCO English Second Language 5.1):
- Learners should be able to name and follow the five stages of the writing process: planning, drafting, revising, editing and the final copy.
- Learners should be able to plan a piece of writing by brainstorming ideas, drawing a mind map, and choosing and ordering the best ideas.
- Learners should be able to consider the Purpose, Audience and Format (PAF) of a task before they begin to write.
- Learners should be able to build a paragraph around one main idea, using a topic sentence and supporting sentences, and to organise a piece into introduction, body and conclusion.
- Learners should be able to start a new paragraph for a new idea and use linking words between paragraphs.
- Learners should be able to mix simple, compound and complex sentences and to write in complete sentences only.
- Learners should be able to revise, edit and proofread their work against a checklist, using self- and peer-editing.
- Learners should be able to keep to a sensible length and stay relevant to the task set.
