Task 2 — multiple matching

In Paper 1, Section A, Task 2 is a nine-mark matching puzzle. You are given either one text split into labelled sections, or several short texts on one topic, and for each question you decide which part it belongs to. The secret is that the writer paraphrases — so you must match by MEANING, not by spotting the same word. In this lesson we learn a calm five-step method, then work right through one full example, matching statements to four short Namibian texts.
What you'll learn in this lesson
By the end you should be able to (NSSCO English Second Language 4.3):
- Explain what a multiple-matching task (Task 2) asks you to do and that it is worth 9 marks
- Recognise the two forms the passage can take: one text split into labelled sections, or several short texts on a related topic
- Read all the questions or statements first, then skim each section and jot a keyword beside it
- Match each question to the correct text or section by MEANING, not by finding the same word (understand paraphrase)
- Spot and avoid distractors — sections that share a word but do not truly answer the question
- Follow the instruction about whether an option is used once only or may be used more than once, and tick off options as you use them
