- Identify a writer's intention or purpose — to inform, persuade, entertain, warn, criticise, reassure or amuse.
- Distinguish clearly between tone (the writer's attitude to the subject) and mood (the feeling created in the reader).
- Name a writer's tone precisely, using a rich vocabulary rather than vague words like 'happy' or 'sad'.
- Explain how word choice, imagery, punctuation and sentence length work together to create tone.
- Recognise a writer's feelings from a text and respond to them appropriately.
- Support every claim about tone by quoting the exact word or phrase that creates it.
