- Learners should be able to explain where the imaginative and creative options sit in Paper 2 and how much of the paper they carry.
- Learners should be able to name and explain the five stages of Freytag's Pyramid — exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution or denouement.
- Learners should be able to fit a complete story shape into 220–260 words by sketching the exposition quickly and reaching the climax in time.
- Learners should be able to distinguish plot, character and setting, and reveal character through action and dialogue rather than through description.
- Learners should be able to choose a setting deliberately in order to create atmosphere.
- Learners should be able to build tension and suspense by withholding key information until it lands hardest.
- Learners should be able to write an opening that starts in the middle of the action and raises a question in the reader's mind.
- Learners should be able to hold a consistent viewpoint and a consistent tense across a whole essay.
