The last five minutes of a writing paper are the cheapest marks you will ever earn. Learn to edit like a writer, proofread like an examiner, and reflect honestly on purpose, form and audience.
What you'll learn in this lesson
By the end you should be able to (NSSCAS English Second Language (AS) 5.2.9):
- Learners should be able to explain the difference between editing (improving content, structure and word choice) and proofreading (catching surface errors), and say why editing must come first.
- Learners should be able to apply a proofreading checklist covering spelling, punctuation, subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, missing words, and sentence fragments or run-ons.
- Learners should be able to find and correct tense slips, agreement errors and punctuation errors in their own and others' writing.
- Learners should be able to evaluate and reflect upon the qualities of their own writing, including aspects relating to its purpose, form and audience.
- Learners should be able to check that they have answered the actual question set, not the question they wished had been set.
- Learners should be able to self-assess a piece of writing against the Content and Language marking grids the way an examiner would.
- Learners should be able to make corrections neatly and legibly under exam conditions.
- Learners should be able to run a seven-point self-check in the last five minutes of a writing paper.
