Trade unions & employer associations

Narrated lesson · press play

In this lesson we learn how workers join together to protect themselves at work. A trade union is an association of workers formed to improve their pay and their working conditions through collective bargaining. We learn the aims of trade unions, the advantages of joining one, and the methods they use — from negotiation right up to a strike as a last resort. We meet the types of union in Namibia (white-collar, blue-collar and craft), and the country's biggest federation, the NUNW. We study the factors that affect how strong a union can be, weigh up the good and the bad side of unions, and finish by learning what employer associations do on the other side of the table.
