How well do people really live? In this lesson we learn what 'living standards' means, and how economists try to measure and compare them. We meet the quick money measure — GDP per person — and see why, on its own, it can mislead us. Then we meet wider indicators like the Human Development Index, life expectancy and literacy that give a fuller picture. We look at why living standards differ so much both within Namibia and between countries, and we finish with a modern question: how do mobile phones and the internet change the way people live?
