What is development? Development and the developing world

Why do people in one country live long, comfortable lives with good schools and hospitals, while people in another struggle for clean water and work? The answer is a single, powerful idea: development. In this first lesson we build a clear definition of development across four aspects — economic, social, political and environmental — then meet the labels used to compare countries (developed and developing, MEDC and LEDC, NICs, capitalism and communism), and finish by explaining why some countries are far more developed than others.
What you'll learn in this lesson
By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Development Studies 1.1):
- Define the term "development" with reference to social, economic, political and environmental aspects
- Describe the broad pattern of world development: developed and developing, Less Economically Developed Countries (LEDC) and More Economically Developed Countries (MEDC), industrialised and non-industrialised, capitalism and communism, and newly industrialised countries (NICs)
- Explain how historical, political, social, resource and economic factors influence the level of development in different countries
