Water supply: tools, pumps & maintenance

In dry Namibia, water is life — and on most farms the livestock depend on a borehole pumped up into a reservoir and out to a trough. In this lesson we meet the tools used on a water system, the fittings that join the pipes, the four kinds of water pump and their parts, and why we must clean and maintain it all so the water never stops flowing.
What you'll learn in this lesson
By the end you should be able to (NSSCO Agricultural Science 7.3):
- Identify and explain the use of the tools: pulley, block and tackle, pipe spanners and vice-grip
- Identify and explain the uses of the fittings used in water installation: pipe nipple, nipple adapter, T-piece, reducer, elbow joint and tap washers
- Identify different water pumps used for supplying water to farmers: motor-driven pump, submersible pump, hand pump and Blake hydram pump
- State the functions of the basic parts of a water pump
- Explain the necessity of regular cleaning and maintenance of water installations and describe how it is done
