Why can a Kavango farmer grow lush maize in dark loam, while sandy Kalahari ground swallows every drop of rain? The answer is in the soil itself — the size of its tiny grains and the mix of things packed between them. In this lesson we meet the three great soil types — sand, clay and loam — one at a time, then open a handful of soil to see the five ingredients hiding inside every one.

- Describe the main characteristics of clay soil, sand soil and loam soil in terms of particle size, pore space, water retention, temperature, cultivation and plant growth
- Describe the components of different types of soil (sand, clay and loam) in terms of mineral particles, organic matter, air, water and living organisms
