Feeding farm animals: nutrients & rations

Narrated lesson · press play

Why does one farmer's cattle grow fat, glossy and strong while the neighbour's stay thin and weak on the very same veld? The secret is feeding. In this lesson we meet the seven nutrients every animal needs, sort feeds into concentrates and roughages, watch grass lose its goodness as it ages, and learn to plan a balanced ration — maintenance plus production — for each stage of an animal's life on a Namibian farm.

What you'll learn in this lesson

  • Describe the change in nutritive value of forage with age
  • Describe the nutritional content and feeding practices, including the importance of a balanced ration, maintenance ration and production ration and the importance of an adequate water supply
  • Outline the suitability of different rations to the ages and stages of development of livestock
  • Describe the symptoms of nutrient deficiency in farm animals and appropriate corrective measures
