Classification & economic significance of common crops

Stand in the Oshakati market on a busy Saturday: sacks of mahangu, heaps of groundnuts, sweet oranges, bottles of cooking oil. Every one came from a crop a farmer chose to grow. But which crops feed a nation, which earn export dollars, and which does dry Namibia have to buy in? In this lesson we sort every common crop into its class and learn why each group matters for food, cash, factories and trade.

What you'll learn in this lesson

By the end you should be able to (NSSCAS Agricultural Science (AS) 3.2):

  • Explain what it means to classify crops, and define the economic significance of a crop
  • Name the main classes of common crops and give example crops in each class
  • State the class of cereals (maize, rice, sorghum, millet/mahangu, wheat) and explain their economic significance as staple foods
  • State the class of legumes/pulses (cowpea, groundnuts, soya bean) and explain their economic significance for protein, oil and soil fertility
  • Describe the tuber/root crops (yam, potatoes, sweet potatoes, cassava), vegetables and fruits and their economic significance
  • Describe the beverage, oil, latex, fibre, sugar and fodder crops and the economic significance of each class
  • Discuss which of these crops are grown in Namibia and which are imported
  • Classify given crops correctly into their classes
